1950s: Type 2 begins

Dutch importer Ben Pon’s sketch led to the Type 2 Transporter. Westfalia and others soon added pop-tops and compact kitchens, the template for “van as mini home” was set.

1960s–70s: counterculture icon

Affordable, customisable buses became festival and surf transport. That emotional link still drives demand for clean T2 and early bay-window stock.

T3–T4: water-cooled modernisation

Boxier T3 “Wedge” vans brought better cruising for long European trips. T4 moved the engine forward, changing conversion layouts buyers now take for granted.

T5–T7: the professional conversion era

Today’s market is dominated by T5/T6/T6.1 professional conversions, the sweet spot for many customers leaving Cardiff for the Gower at Friday teatime. The T7 adds tech and width; compare generations in our T6.1 vs T7 article.

Looking forward

Electric ID. Buzz concepts nod to the past while targeting zero-emission touring. For most buyers today, a well-chosen used Transporter conversion remains the pragmatic choice.
